Malawi Immigration won’t join civilservants strike

www.jaeone.waphall.com

Immigration Department has said it
will not be joining the nationwide civil
servants strike. More than 100,000 state workers
started strike last week demanding a
65 percent wage increase – about
double the inflation rate – to counter a
rising cost of living triggered by a
devaluation of the kwacha currency. By Wednesday, the strike had grown
with public schools being closed as
teachers are on strike and striking
workers shut down the main airport.
Nurses have threatened to join. However, Immigration Department
dispelled some media reports which
claimed they would be joining the
strike.
“As a security institution, immigration
officers do not involve themselves in
an industrial action of this nature,”
said a statement made available to
Nyasa Times from Immigration
Department. The Immigration Department said
airports, border posts and all its offices
will “remain operational.”
